Micro vs Mini Highland: The Size Classes Explained

Published 2026-07-10 · The Highland Fold

"Mini cow" covers a range of sizes. Breeders generally sort miniature Highlands into three classes by mature hip height.

The three classes

Mid-size miniature (roughly 107–122cm), standard miniature (about 91–107cm), and micro miniature (under about 91cm, and genuinely rare). The smaller and more consistent the line, the more selective breeding it took to get there — which is why micros sit at the top of the market.

Which is right for you?

For a gentle paddock companion, a miniature or mid-size steer is easy and affordable. For a standout or a breeding foundation, a micro or rare-colour heifer is the prize. We'll help you match the animal to your goals and setup.
