PIC & NLIS Explained: What Every Mini Cow Owner Needs

Published 2026-07-10 · The Highland Fold

Before your calf comes home, two acronyms matter: PIC and NLIS. They're simpler than they sound.

PIC — Property Identification Code

A PIC identifies the property where livestock are kept. You'll need one to own cattle, even a single pair on a small block. Your state department of agriculture issues them, usually free or low-cost.

NLIS — National Livestock Identification System

NLIS tracks cattle movements for biosecurity and traceability. When your animal moves to you, the transfer is recorded against your PIC. We handle this with you so nothing is missed.

Buyer safety

A seller's PIC is also a trust signal — you can check it on the NLIS database. Always do, and always pay against a proper contract.
